In GPS (Geo-Political System), various issues arise in various studies. One of them is the issue of the rise of China as the main competitor of the United States of America. Currently, various studies are being conducted to understand and prepare for China as the leading actor in the world order.
For the United States, the presence of China certainly has an impact as the country’s main competitor. Because of this, China has become one of the main threats to the global influence of the United States.
This situation certainly has a significant impact on the world order, where its influence can impact third countries. For this reason, a study of the future of the world order is vital to know how the future direction of the world will be.
According to the United States version, when the Soviet Union collapsed after the cold war, two ideologies became a threat to the world, namely Islam and Communists.
The communist state, which can be seen from the experience of the Soviet Union, fell. Likewise, Muslim countries in the Middle East were devastated after the Cold War, from Iraq to Syria. However, the communist state of China is experiencing a very rapid revival.
This country has no problem with the ideology it adheres to, but it is worried about the expansion of economic power, which has become so strong in the last decade.
This situation needs attention from the global threat perspective, especially how understanding communist ideology is not a problem when it becomes a massive global economic power.
On the other hand, the United States government is preoccupied with domestic and foreign affairs. As the ”world police”, this country wants to stabilize the state of this world through its military power. This role as the ”world police” is not comparable to the economic power that has begun to decline in recent years.
The domestic problems, which are pretty complicated, also give color to the influence of the United States in the global arena. The issue in question is regarding the figure and temperament of President Donald Trump, which increasingly provides dynamics both inside and outside America.
In other words, China is trying to replace the United States. Meanwhile, the United States is in turmoil, maintaining its position as a prominent global actor. This fight, of course, does not have to be resolved through conflict or war, as the United States did in Vietnam or other Middle Eastern countries.
In this regard, the United States government already has experience dealing with global crises. Alliances or allies of the United States will undoubtedly work hand in hand to maintain this nation’s strategic position.
However, the efforts made to deal with China are not through direct attacks on the country, as was done against Muslim countries in the Middle East.
To face China, the United States must think about various aspects that must be prepared, namely: the economy, politics, security, and technology.
If these four things can be controlled massively by the United States, then the presence of China as the main rival can be conquered. However, China’s strength in these four respects is already close to the word ”perfect” to confront the United States.
At the same time, when the United States sent its troops to fight in the Middle East, China instead sent its troops to make roads in various countries in the Middle East and Africa. When the United States is busy carrying out sanctions against countries hostile to it, China has even disbursed funds to help the economic downturn in several countries.
The difference in approach in playing a significant role on the global stage shows how international attitudes and responses are to the two countries. In other words, the United States first destroys and then helps repair it. Meanwhile, China helps first and then controls the country it has weaned.
In this context, we are studying how the face of the world order in the future needs to be studied in depth. The world order that will apply in the future will be more complicated than forming the previous world order.
The pattern to regulate how the world should run always begins with a war between human beings. So far, the Cold War, World War II, and World War I are fragments of world history that brought out the winners to carry out their interests on the global stage. However, after the Cold War, the rise of China was never planned. This is because the collapse of the Soviet Union and chaos in the Middle East are undeniable historical facts.
However, the presence of China as a new giant in the world has not received serious attention at all since the early 1990s. Because of this, the process of discovering a new direction for the world order today is no longer only controlled by the United States, but China is already present in it.
The study, in turn, seeks to understand how the process of China’s rise and the response of the United States and its allies. I am not a scientist who studies international relations or geopolitics. Therefore, there is no specific theoretical set to understand the current phenomena between China and the United States.
So far, what has been done is to collect as much material as possible to explore what the two countries have done to smooth out their respective national interests. An in-depth analysis was then carried out from these materials to find out the messages behind the text narratives that discussed China and the United States.
Thus, this study is not theoretical but only a description of my understanding of what will happen in this world when looking at the competition between China and the United States. Oriana Skylar Mastro said, “China is trying to displace the United States rather than replace.”
Something is fascinating about understanding the competition between China and the United States. On the one hand, the United States adheres to a liberal order system. On the other hand, China promotes an illiberal order.
Here, China is more concerned with domestic stability through authoritarianism. China’s success in becoming a superpower in the economy seems to have changed the global order. The work of Martin Jacques is described in detail in When China Rules the World.
As for the order, Henry Kissinger, in his book World Order divides it into three levels:
World order describes the concept held by a region or civilization about the nature of just arrangements and the distribution of power thought to apply to the entire world. The international order is the practical application of these concepts to a substantial part of the globe – large enough to affect the global balance of power. Regional orders involve the same principles applied to a defined geographic area.
The presence of China would, of course, disrupt, not to say threaten, the world order, the international order, and the regional order. China is preparing to face the United States and its allies. The country also expanded in several regions and influenced various international institutions.
It is undeniable that China’s influence has also begun to be felt in the conflict in the South China Sea. As described above, China’s sphere of influence is no longer only in the East Asia region.
However, it has also extended to other continents, including the Americas, which shows that China wants to dominate the world order with the various strategies currently being carried out.
Therefore, the study of China became the most widely studied study after studies on Islam and the Middle East. This implies that scholars will continue to study China, whether working independently or as part of the government.
In this context, this essay is here to give a little picture to readers in Indonesia about what the future of the world will be when China is genuinely at the forefront of the global order.
